Frequently asked questions
What can I convert .sav and .dta files to?+
CSV (universal tabular text), Excel .xlsx (with a second sheet holding the variable dictionary), and JSON (in record, column, or split layouts). You choose how labels, dates, and missing values are represented.
Will my variable and value labels survive the conversion?+
It depends on the target. CSV is values-only, so labels can be written in place of codes or used as headers but cannot live in the file. Excel keeps a full dictionary on a separate sheet, and JSON can substitute labels for codes. For a complete dictionary, generate a codebook.
Are dates converted correctly?+
Yes. SPSS and Stata count dates from different origins. The converter translates each to a readable ISO date (or you can keep the raw numbers), so a date does not silently shift by decades.
Is it free and private?+
Yes on both counts. Conversion runs in your browser with no account, and the file is never sent to a server.
